Money is a terrible master but an excellent servant.

-P.T. Barnum

Looking at the books is rarely a happy pass time for people.  Economics defines itself as the art of satisfying unlimited wants with limited resources.  So, not having as much as you might like is a common situation.

Many people use ignorance as their protection, but that just causes problems.  Managing your money is like mowing your lawn.  If you do things right, you’ll never have a problem, but if you let it get out of hand, you might never get it right again.

So, next time you push away those books, ask yourself, will you serve money, or will it serve you?

  1. The above is particularly relevant to small business and sole trader operations. Who rarely have time to spend looking after the books when they are stretched to the limit meeting their customers needs. When your small business reaches this point either you have to employ someone to look after the administration for you, therein adding other headaches, or look at the more cost effective option of outsourcing your bookkeeping and administration needs. There are many such services available.
